Yes, the rumors are true. I’ve got a second book out on the Amazon stage. It’s been a different journey on this one than with the first. I knew a bit more about the publishing game this time around. I knew a bit more about my own writing, and how to get this whole thing to work. I’m still trying different things, and I’m a long way from having any secret formula, but I’m hoping I’ll keep learning as I go.
This one’s called “Tomorrow’s News Today,” and it’s hugely influenced by the hours upon hours of Hitchcock and Twilight Zone I’ve spent watching over the past 30+ years. There’s also some Stephen King influence in there, which you can probably count on with most of my books. I’ve never been a big hardcore sci-fi fan, but there’s something about taking reality as it sits, adding just one twist, and then seeing how the real world reacts that really interests me. It’s probably also why I’ve always enjoyed alternate history books and stories, like “The Man in the High Castle.”
This book is a novella — only about 65 pages, compared to nearly 300 for “Killing the Immortals” — so it’s a really quick read if you want to give it a shot. It’s also only available on Kindle for now, but I’d anticipate the story finding its way onto paper at some point. I’ve got several of these shorter stories rattling around in my skull, and I’d expect I’ll collect several together into a physical copy at some point. In the meantime, though, it’s a lot less expensive to get it to you in digital form now, and then figure out how to deliver paper copies once I have something a bit more substantial so I can kill more trees.
Here’s a look at my synopsis, to hopefully entice some of you to plunk down a couple of bucks and give the book a read:
Walt’s life is crumbling around him. His marriage is in a shambles, his wife only acknowledging his existence insomuch as he can help raise their young son. His editor at the small-town newspaper where he works wants nothing more than to replace him with someone younger, cheaper — and better. He barely has any reason to go on.
But, suddenly, he finds that anything he writes will come true. Everything he puts to paper turns into the future reality. And he quickly realizes that this newfound, and possibly temporary, power could be used to change everything about the direction of his life. Rekindle his marriage. Jumpstart his career. Invigorate his life.
How does he try to use this gift to change his life’s direction? And can he resist temptation, and use it for good? If you like “The Twilight Zone” and Hitchcock thrillers, you’ll love this novella, a quick read that will drive toward an ending you won’t see coming.
